Tips for RNs

5 SIMPLE STEPS THAT COULD SAVE YOUR CAREER

1. Understand your current coverage. What does your employer cover? What do you need personal insurance for? What does your malpractice insurance cover? Do you have licence protection? What happens if someone at work makes a complaint about something that is outside the scope of your work? If you need help deciphering you current coverage, give Goyette & Associates a call.

2. Identify your risks. How are your relationships at work? Is your speciality a high-risk field? Are you stressed out? Do you get enough sleep? Do you drink alcohol? What other factors might affect your work?

3. Evaluate your finances. Do you have enough in savings to pay attorney fees? (For a list of common fees, visit RN Guardian’s homepage and scroll down.) Will your savings be enough to support your family if your pay is suspended? Will your family be able to survive financially if you have to switch careers?

4. Familiarize yourself with the Board of Registered Nurses. Do you know all the different reasons you can be investigated? Do you know who can file a complaint against you? Do you know how common investigations are? Visit RN Guardian’s articles of interest and scroll down for a summary of the investigation process.

5. Be prepared to act. Have a plan for if/when a complaint against you is filed with the BRN. If you belong to RN Guardian, just contact us as soon as you receive notice of an investigation and we’ll jump into action. If you have decided to hire an attorney on your own, have a law firm that specializes in your state’s nursing issues selected and call them immediately.  Make sure you ask about their experience in defending RNs, their success rate, their fee structure, and how long it takes to get an attorney assigned to your case in advance.
